Prompt engineer – what do they do, and what sort of salary can they expect?
What is an AI prompt engineer, and how much will they earn in 2026? Learn about their job responsibilities, the skills required, and realistic pay rates on the Polish labour market.

Until recently, artificial intelligence was mainly associated with futuristic visions from science fiction films. Today, AI writes texts, analyses data, supports customer service, generates graphics and helps programmers write code faster than ever before. Along with the boom in tools such as ChatGPT, a new profession has also emerged – the AI prompt engineer. For some, it is one of the decade's most promising specialisations; for others, a fad fuelled by AI's popularity. What is the reality? What does an AI prompt engineer actually do, and how much can you earn in this industry?
AI prompt engineer – who exactly are they?
An AI prompt engineer creates instructions for artificial intelligence models. However, in practice, this sounds much simpler than it is day to day. In large organisations, it is no longer simply a matter of typing a single question into ChatGPT, but of designing entire communication systems.
AI models operate differently from traditional computer programmes. They do not execute commands in a binary ‘on-off’ manner. They analyse context, predict the next words and attempt to generate useful responses in line with the user’s intent. That's why how commands are phrased matters so much. AI interprets language based on training data, context and the structure of the message. Even a minor change to a prompt can significantly alter the result, as language models are highly sensitive to context, tone and the order of instructions.
Increasingly, experts cite prompt engineering as an additional skill integral to the day-to-day work of analysts, marketers, developers, and AI consultants. According to the Microsoft Work Trend Index 2025 report, AI prompt engineering is no longer merely a single role. Still, it is increasingly becoming a set of skills required in an AI-driven work environment.
AI roles – what are the responsibilities of a prompt engineer?
A person in this role may be responsible for: In many organisations, the AI prompt engineer now acts as a link between business and technology. What matters here is the ability to translate business needs into clear instructions for models. Equally important is the ability to design communication processes between humans and AI systems.
- creating prompts for chatbots and AI assistants,
- developing automation workflows,
- improving the quality of language model responses,
- analysing errors in generated content,
- creating prompt libraries for teams,
- collaborating with IT, marketing and data analytics departments,
- integrating AI into day-to-day business processes,
- testing commands and their effectiveness
- designing workflows based on AI agents
- integrating language models with company systems
What does the day-to-day work of an AI prompt engineer with language models look like?
On social media, one often comes across a simplified portrayal of this profession. Short videos suggest that a prompt engineer earns huge sums of money simply by typing a few sentences into ChatGPT. The reality, however, is quite different.
It is a job based mainly on experimentation, analysis and the continuous refinement of results. It very often resembles research and analytical work. The same AI model can generate completely different responses depending on:
the order of the prompts. A good specialist understands how artificial intelligence interprets language and can anticipate potential model errors. Crucially, this includes the ability to write precise instructions, converse with AI, and critically evaluate the generated responses.
- the level of detail in the instructions,
- the context used,
- the tone of the statement,
- the length of the prompt,
- and the example data attached to the query.
When designing prompts, it is crucial to provide the model with appropriate context and ensure the safety of the generated content. Companies are now paying increasing attention to ensuring that AI models do not generate incorrect or risky responses.
The day-to-day work of an AI prompt engineer often involves:
- analysing the quality of responses
- creating libraries of ready-made instructions
- optimising workflows
- deploying AI agents
- working with AI tools
- integrating models with company systems
- analysing data generated by AI
Why is AI prompt engineering gaining in importance?
Just a few years ago, most organisations treated artificial intelligence as a technological curiosity. The situation changed following the launch of ChatGPT and the rapid development of generative AI.
Companies very quickly realised that language models enable them to extract maximum value from data, processes and automation. Well-designed prompts can improve customer service, marketing, sales, HR and labour market analysis.
AI prompt engineering is becoming a key future skill, supporting automation development, new product design, and day-to-day work with AI tools. Interestingly, the ability to craft prompts is no longer the exclusive preserve of programmers. Professionals in marketing, HR, business strategy, and content creation also use prompt engineering skills.
Companies are investing more and more heavily in skills related to AI, automation and data analysis. This applies to both large corporations and smaller organisations implementing artificial intelligence into their day-to-day work.
Experts also emphasise that prompt engineering requires staying up to date with AI trends and adapting communication methods to evolving AI models. Those interested in developing their skills should, of course, follow industry portals and forums dedicated to artificial intelligence.
